I want to know that, would be great if you could link some wites that have some info on the accuracies and inaccuracies of the BMI system.

Is BMI misleading? why?

I have been seing peiople doing some tests on BMI lately, one particular on ei saw was someone who had graphed BMI compared to Blood pressure, heart rates, lung capacites, resting hear rates etc.

I would seem to think that these results would be rather inaccurate considering that BMI does not take into account Fat compared to muscle?

please explain why a test liek this would be accurate/inaccurate and any other things that could compromise the accuracy in any way of this experiment.

Hi all

I started going to the gym about a year ago, trying to lose a bit of weight, and was dreading finding out quite how unfit I was.

I was quite suprised when I was jogging on the treadmill and actually felt ok. However, I had my heart rate monitored after 5 just 5 minutes of jogging and it was 187.

This scared me a little bit as I thought this was really really high, so I went to the doctor and had my resting heart rate and blood pressure taken. They were both well within the normal parameters.

But the next week, my heart rate after jogginf was still what I believe is unusually high – even though I actually felt ok.

Over the last year, I think I have thankfully got a fair bit fitter. My heart rate now after 15 minutes running on the treadmill is max 170. My resting heart rate is still around and about 73.

So, a lower exercising heart rate with a bit more exercise ( I don’t just use the treadmill btw lol) means that my heart of getting healthier …… doesn’t it?

My main issues are basically :

how come if my heart rate when exercising is so dangerously high, how come I am not in any pain?

and

Can anyone tell me other things I can do to try and control my heart rate? Im within a healthy weight and BMI range, late 20′s, my cholesterol is not high, and I have regular checks on my resting heart rate and blood poressure and they are all fine…

I am 5’3" 162lbs, and I’m a 27 year old female. According to BMI I am borderline obese, an online test said I should weigh about 120lbs.

I went in for a microfit test today at our gym. They used a skin fold test, tested my blood pressure and heart rate, tested bicep strength, back flexibility and aerobic fitness. My BP was 118/81 (a little elevated for me, but no biggie) and was scored as excellent. Resting heart rate was 71/excellent. Skin fold (body fat percentage) was 27.6, which was rated as fair. I had 54inch reach in back flexibility which scored excellent. Bicep strength was 70lbs and was rated excellent. My aerobic fitness was questionable, since I’m on medication that causes my heart rate to fluctuate, and before I even got on the machine my heart rate slowly went up to 101 beats per minute, and during the test my heart rate went up to 145bpm with little effort (stationary biking at about 50 revolutions per minute) and I scored "needs improvement" on that.
She said other than my aerobic and body fat percentage I had great physical fitness, although she said my body fat percentage still fell into an acceptable range. She put my "healthy weight" at 135.
So I’m confused, does body mass matter more, or does body fat and overall fitness? Am I in bad shape or decent?
I carry most of my fat on my hips, thighs, upper arms and chest (boobs)
Also, I know I’m overweight, that’s obvious when I look in the mirror. But is the overal fitness level ok, and how does it compare to BMI?

heart rates for training?

hi im 16 male, and train 4 days a week for athletics (400m) and 2days gym, i do a lot of fitness stuff im asthmatic and my resting heart rate is like 75-80bpm when im training it gets up to 190+ sometimes i thought athletes were meant to have a lower heart rate ive been training for 2 years im 1.91m tall and 77.5 kg my bmi is 21.0 and im 7-8% body fat what sort of things can factor into this? please help!

at what hear rate should i do cardio?

my HR at rest is 64. when i do cardio at high intensity it goes up to 176+. I never get out of breath at that heart rate but i get scared just looking at the number. do u think i am exceeding a healthy limit? ( I excercise for fitness and also to lose 12 lb though i am ok at 23.3 BMI. also if it helps to answer better… I am 28, female)

Ok so I hav ea heart rate monitor the one where it comes with a watch and a little belt thing to go around your chest. Its no any kind of name brand I bought it from Fred Meyer’s it was like 30$ or something. so I don’t know how accurate it is. I am 23 5’4" and weigh 140 lbs. my bmi is 24.1 fat percentage is 36 ish. thoes are just off a website so ? well when I wore the heart rate monitor I jogged at 4.5mph on treamill for 25 min. whith a 4 min warmup walk. the treamill counter said I burned 300 calories but my heart monitor said I burned 500 cal…thats a big difference. Which one is more accurate and why ??
my husband says to just use the lower one to know for sure I’m burning enough but I just want to know what is most accurate..cause 200 cal, thats alot.
my treadmill doesn’t have an age or weight input. its older I guess I bought it from the calssifieds.

Right then fitness nuts, I want to know what you think about BMI ratings. Personally i do not think BMI makes much sense. This is because it does not take into account for all the different aspects of how your body is composed. For instance i have a body composition monitor, it gives me a reading as follows:
body fat 17.2%
muscle 78.3%
water 60.7%
bmi 27.4
(height: 1.88m weight 88.8 kilos or 195 pounds) waist size 34.

I do workout 3 to 4 times a week and consider myself as very active am not a body builder but do have a quite a ok muscular physic and i only eat healthy fresh foods which ive prepared myself as i cannot stand junk food or ready made stuff yuk!!

So the results show that my fat percentage is considered healthy, Muscle percentage is relatively high and water percentage which is well hydrated although there is no way of actually categorising the water percentage results. BMI tells me that im over weight and boarder line obese. So whats going on guys?? According to this result im at risk of heart desease and diebities.

What worries me the most is that there may be people or even parents out there who think they may think they are over weight and are getting the wrong information .

13 years old, really high resting heart rate?

Every once and a while, I’ll get what I call an episode. My resting heart rate will be above above 120BPM, sometimes it will last for a few days, other times it will last for 2hours.
One morning, I woke up, I was out of breath so I walked down stairs and stood on the treadmill to use the heart rate monitor, my heart got up to 150BPM.
I did end of going to the ER the next day to get it checked out.
I am 13 years old, 5’10 and have a healthy BMI, the last time I had a growth spurt was when I was 10 or 11, so my heart should have caught up by now.
Anyway, I am kind of scared so I want to know if anyone has had something similar to this

I got a (good quality)HR monitor this week and i have started running with the intention of running a half marathon in April. Now im only doing what i would have considered light pace running but according to my HR monitor i am at 98-100% of my max HR when i do anything more than walk briskly!
Im 22, 5’11" and weight 160lbs/72kg so my BMI would suggest i am in good shape. Now i have had very little exercise in the last few years in college and have done my fair share of drinking so im not surprised that i am unfit but if walking has me at my optimum HR thats pretty shocking. I was running and my HR would skyrocket but i didnt feel out of breath at all.

How am i supposed to get fit and train for a race if my HR says i cant even run!?

My resting HR is also quite low generally between 50bpm and 64bpm so that would also suggest i was quite fit. Is it dangerous to run at 100% of my max HR? During the summer before i had the monitor i must have been at 100% because i was pushing myself much harder.
