Looking for advice on preparing for a Marathon?

First, I am planning to run in the Chicago Marathon on October 7. I am 38 and have NEVER run a marathon in my life. I have actually let myself get out of shape…I’m 240 lbs and stand 5’11". I believe I need to lose at least 60 pounds in order to be at a healthy running weight.

My goals are both fitness and awareness as I am planning on doing this with my Church to bring awareness to the AIDS issues in Africa. We are teaming up with World Vision.

Anyway, as I go to get started I have seen loads of material that shows an 18-24 week training program to run a marathon…however many of these assume that you can run at 5 mph to start.

I can go 5 mph for about a 1/2 mile and then I hit a wall…I have been training on a treadmill in my local gym using the 5K as my usual work out. I have walked it at 3.5MPH at a 4% incline and my heart rate stayed at 129-132 fro the duration of the work out…when I run at 4.0MPH or faster, my hear rate jumps to 170 give or take 5.

BURN 200 CALORIES IN 10 MINUTES!!!

Using a POLAR heart rate monitor, calculating calories burned for my height and weight playing light basketball. This equates to about 2000 CALORIES BURNED in a two hour period. note: 1 lb = 3500 cal Your metabolic rate depends on your weight and height, this total with the calories you burn from exercise, menus calorie intake from food (fuel) = calories burned for the day. This simple equation can help you determine how much weight you can lose within a week or a month etc with an exercise routine and diet. Outdoor temperature this day was around 90+ location, Richmond Hill, New York; Forest Park, Jackson Pond. By doing this last summer (summer of 2010) i shed over 40lbs with a low calorie diet. An underlying heart condition?

Running, cardio training…

OK, I think I have a heart problem, or I am seriously out of shape, or my heart rate just goes up so high … I am in the US Army and currently deployed… I have a physical fitness test coming up and I am doing cardio and weights alternatively, this morning I pushed myself a little on the treadmill and I was shocked to see my HR was 194 bpm at the end of 10 min running program but immediately started going down of course…

I started with 7.0 mph for 2:30 and @ 2:30 mark I went up to 7.5 mph, @5:00 I went up to 8.0 and @7:30 I went up to 8.5mph…. Last minute, when I hit 9 minutes I went up to 9.0 mph… when cool down started after 10 mins, I grabbed the sensor handles and there it is, 194 bpm…

Why does this happen? I have to go much faster than this to get a good score, or maybe same speed but for more than 10 mins … Maybe I have always been like this, just want to know, if it could be an underlying heart condition??

My resting heart rate is at about 64 bpm, but the slightest movement changes my bpm to 80, is this normal? I do exercise 6 days a week and I would rate myself as a healthy individual, but I just wanted to make sure my heart is healthy. Thank you!

And I’m using a MIO SHape Elite Heart Rate Monitor watch to measure my bpm
What should a 22 year old female’s resting heart rate be?

and no, I dont smoke weed or do any drugs. hahaha.
I’m 5’3", if that affects the way my heart rate should measure.

What is an easy workout I can do one the go?

I am a college student and I’m usually very busy. I quit dancing so I quickly became out of shape. I was looking into getting a fitness quest red xl or something similar because it seems like something I can do while sitting in my apartment and multitasking. but do those sort of things actually work? or whats a good alternative? I’m looking for something that will tone my body but mainly something that will get my heart rate up and is easy for me to do daily.

Question for fitness training?

If I’m being completely honest, I am out of shape. I’m probably 30-40 pounds overweight and I get a bit winded walking up a flight of stairs. However, I could hop on a stationary bike or elliptical machine right now and do a 30-40 minute work out at a relatively decent pace and I wouldn’t feel totally wasted for the rest of the day. I know this because I do it from time to time.

I have two questions:
1. Do you have any advice for staying motivated to exercise? I can get started and go strong for a week or two, but then I’ll have a busy couple of days that keep me from exercising and my motivation is gone – usually for months at a time.

2. What’s the best way to exercise on a stationary bike or elliptical machine to improve cardio fitness? One of main things I would like to accomplish in the short term is being able to climb stairs without becoming winded. Dropping weight is obviously a long term goal, but it’s not my most immediate concern.

For what it’s worth, when I say I get winded after climbing stairs, I don’t mean that I actually have to sit down and rest or that I’m worn out for the day. I just mean that I am a little out of breath and it takes me a few minutes to return to a resting rate.

I’m 36. When I do work out on a bike or elliptical for 30 minutes or so, my heart rate is normally around 150 bpm. My resting heart rate is about 80 bpm.

I had a bad foot injury due to the ice from running in the winter.. and I haven’t done ANY exercise since, and I just started yesterday. Surprisingly, I could do 5 miles at a good pace (about at the pace I actually usually run in), and I could do 8 miles fast today.. weird. I actually felt a LOT better and faster in my runs than in the winter (it is about 55 degrees now, compared to 30 degrees in the winter), and I was supposed to get out of shape.

How did I run those miles and why did I not feel out of shape? I used a heart rate monitor thing on my watch, it used to be 45-55 bpm in the winter, and supposedly i’m out of shape according to my heart, since my heart rate is now 60-70 bpm.. yikes
And I would actually be fatigued from running in the winter 95% of the time.. weird

Can you tell me if I’m out of shape?? ?

this is a heart rate question…

My max heart rate for my body size/female is 194 (or so the websites say). I purchased a hr monitor and wear it during my 60 spinning class. I believe I’ve calculated my resting hr to be around 62 but it is VERY easy to get my hr up. I have definitely gotten it up into the 190s during spinning class (it is rigorous though) but even walking into the gym, doing strength training, etc. gets it up a little too high I think. The last spinning class I took, I monitored the girl’s hr watch next to me and mine seemed to be consistently 20 beats ahead the entire class. If I were to have my hr at the bpm she had, I wouldn’t feel like I got a good workout.

I understand a way to determine whether or not you are in shape is to see how quickly your hr goes down after exercising…but are there other ways also? Am I just completely out of shape because my hr goes up very quickly?
Thanks for the responses – I’ve been taking this spinning class (which are 60 mins long) for several months now…consistently for a year, maybe taking (at most) 1 month off. The problem is that it is only 1 day a week and on average I would maybe do only one other day of cardio during the same week. So I guess taking this intense cardio class only once a week isnt really doing much?

About resting heart rate!?

I just completed a fitness assessment. For my resting heart rate, my before was 80 and my after (after 3 months of interval cardio 3 times a week) is 58.

My professor and I both thought that was too dramatic to be accurate. But, I took my pulse ten-ish times in 30 minutes to MAKE SURE I was getting 58 bpm. So that number is accurate.

I’m CURRENTLY, as I type this, getting 72 bpm.

Can rhr really fluctuate that much or am I totally out of shape? Which rhr should I trust and base my assessment off of?

I am a thirteen year old male, and about 6 months ago I started getting chest pains, palpitations and a fast heart rate… some of these were also with dizziness. After about a month of symptoms, I went to the doctor. He said he believes it’s not a heart issue or anything dangerous, but to make sure he would get tests done. I had a blood test, EKG, ultrasound of my heart, halter 24 hour monitor, and stress test. He also of course has listened to my heart and done blood pressure tests. All tests were completely normal. I have been to the ER from being worried over this. I have left school, and many other things, because of these feelings. I tell myself nothing is wrong, but at the same time I still worry. My main fear is sudden collapsing of athletes especially, because of heart problems. I have been an athlete for many years but ever since the first symptoms, I haven’t played sports competitively or in a fast paced way. I know I am out of my regular fitness level due to this. Could being out of shape and being stressed over this cause palpitations and a fast heart rate? I admit my habits aren’t great as far as sleep, water amounts I drink, food I eat, and stress levels go, but could this cause anything? I am extremely worried, and any answers would help me.
Thanks, Tj

I really want to get a gym membership at the sportsplex but I am very out of shape and obese(200lbs and 5’1"). The sportsplex offers 3 free sessions with a personal trainer with the membership, but I am afraid that I will make a huge fool out of myself during the workout with him/her.

It doesn’t take much to make my heart rate go up to 150-175bpm while exercising, and I’m afraid that it might be too high…I really want and need to lose weight, but am embarrassed to go to a gym.

The personal trainer does 3 sessions of circuit training, what will that involve? Am I too fat to work out at a gym and what are some tips for working out in the gym when you are overweight?

I also love the stationary bike, if I do 30 minutes of that 3 days a week, will it help me lose weight(while monitoring my calories)?

Thanks so much!

High Resting Heart Rate?

I just go a heart rate monitor over a month ago, and I mostly used it to estimate my calories burned…but I’m starting to wonder if its wrong. My heart rate is high all the time. Just sitting here at the computer its between 90-110…depends how much I move…just moving around organizing papers it will hop up by 10! I don’t get it. I know when I first got it, I wanted to see my resting heart rate, and it was lower around 70…but that was me playing with after I has just woke up…pretty much moved from bed…to couch…if you get what I’m saying. But unless I’m sleeping, it seems to always be very close to 100.

I don’t have any health problems (other than being overweight and out of shape)…but no high blood pressure, no thyroid problems etc.

It says I burn a lot of calories just sitting on my butt. Like 67 calories in a minute…so I’m starting to worry that it is WAY overestimating my calories burned when I’m working out.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks

High heart rate while working out?

I am in average shape, working out maybe twice or three times a week. On most occasions, I use the elliptical for about 45 minutes.

Every time I check (using the machine’s heart rate monitor,) my heart rate is well above the target zone, in the vicinity of 180 to 200. However, I sustain the same level for the full 45 minutes, and I don’t feel sick or fatigued besides normal exercising tiredness. Is this normal?

I have tried lowering the intensity, but it’s hard to hold back if I have the energy to push harder. Recently, I went on a run and my heart rate monitor said I averaged 185 bpm during my 25 minute run, so clearly my high heart rate is not confined to the elliptical machine.
Also, my recovery heart rate is not very long; it dropped by 28bpm in the first minute after stopping my workout. So I’m not terribly out of shape.
Does anyone else have this issue?

I got a stress test done about a year ago because I was having problems running. When I was younger I was diagnosed with sports induced asthma and put on an inhaler. When I asked my new doctor to write a prescription for an inhaler he hooked me up to an EKG, and a daily heart monitor for 1 week. When I did my stress test my heart rate was over 200 and I was walking uphill. I was fine, no pain. When I run I get a sharp pain along with a lot of pressure at my sternum, I cough a lot and I have a burning sensation while breathing. I need to breathe through my mouth because I become short of breath. This is the kicker, this happens only after about 2 minutes of jogging at a 9minute mi pace. Now as of now I am not really in shape per se I mean i’m a tiny thing but I haven’t worked out in about 3 months. But when I did my stress test I was training for a .5 marathon I was runnin 5 mi a day. What is wrong with me? Anyone have any answers?
Hi guys thank you so much for your help. I should add that my doctor did say that I had arrythmia but he didn’t say anything else, about how to take care of it or what I should do and he didn’t seem so sure that was it. Also, last night after drinking only 2 beers I almost passed out from palpatations over 100 bpm, I was dizzy, and sick feeling but totally sober…ok thanks again

I am a 23 year old completely healthy male – 6’4" 200lbs was a collegiate athlete, and every few days or weeks I will be sitting down and get a real dizzy feeling or maybe like tunnel vision but it is not super severe. I have been to a cardiologist and they hooked me up to a 24 hour heart monitor, did an ekg, and an ecg and ran blood tests. Everything came back fine, and it was one of the top cardiologists in texas. I also have a little bit of stress with work and everything – I am getting married in a few months. Could I have a thyroid problem and they not have caught it or is this really just stress related. My heart rate and blood pressure is completely normal although it was super high when I went to the doctors office but the assistant said that was completely normal/ On the 24 hour Holter monitor it had a sixety something average. Also, I used to train 4 hours a day – hard – now i work out but am still fit but not nearly as good of shape as I used to be.
I also need to get my eyes checked – this is probably in some way affecting me. I know I have 20-40 vision or worse but have yet to make it to the eye doctor.

I'm 6'4 250 and need to get in shape?

I need to know my key heart rate for burning fat.I live in pensacola florida and have access to plenty of gyms but i haven’t lifted in id say two months but i play basketball every night for about two hours and i really need to get in shape i still have my baby-fat i guess lol and im 19 years old i just need to know what kind of workouts and activities i should do to work the chest and lose love handles and work on the stomach and just everything over all and how many calories should i eat a day to get on a good diet and how much sugar and ya know stuff like that i dont know im about to go buy a little heart rate watch monitor this weekend soo i just need to know some stuff

Then as I get into better shape I will increase the time. I will be riding a stationary bike at my target heart rate (anywhere from 142 bpm and 152 bpm which would be about 70%-75%). Right now I am able to do about 15 minutes.

I just started working out, taking classes at my college. On m,w I have aerobic dance where we do step aerobics for 50 mins straight. We also have toning at the end with weights and situps, all that good stuff.
On t,th I have aerobic fitness/weight training and of course that is jogging for the first half and weight lifting for the second half, it lasts from 11-1215.
I have never really worked out in my life, the only other excercise I have is a game called dance dance revolution that is all cardio, fast movements and all that stuff.
In class we go over heart rate and my resting heart rate was 70 for one morning and 72 another morning, I take it first thing in the morning before getting out of bed too so I havent moved around yet. I am 18 years old, 5’6, about 130-135lbs.
Is it just that I am out of shape very badly or might there be something wrong with my heart?
btw ill ask a DR anyways after I get some answers back.
Thx for any help!!
for the polar watch, which watch do you recommend? I am at the site

normal heart rate working out?

I was using a tread mill at the gym last month, anyways so i quit smoking for a while and was working out a lot…i wasn’t drinking for at least a month and no drugs. When I was using the treadmill it had a heart rate monitor on the machine when your hands touch, so it was a pretty new machine..my heart rate hit a steady 200-210 and I wasn’t out of breath, is that good or bad or normal idk? maybe you could clarify that for me =) is my heart overworking or something it seemed a bit high but it was accurate as far as I know…I’m a think flexible athletic guy and in shape and was when I was doing it. I can swim across a lake and back and not get out of breath I don’t understand… whats normal???

I’m been a real fitness freak for the last 5 yrs, i run every morning & i was professionally boxing for 3 yrs, but during this whole time I’ve never really experimented with heart rate’s & pedometers(not sure if that has anything do with it). Could somone please explain to me the basics of checking your heart rate while running, how to do it, what numbers i should be aiming for. I need all the help now since i’ve stop boxing & major training seasons, i want to keep my body in shape.
i’m 84 – 85kgs, 6 feet tall. atm if that helps

I’m 25, 6’2" 245 in weight. Most people don’t consider me overweight. 7 years ago, I was 6’2" 230…7% body fat (3 sport athelete).
4 years ago, I was 6’2" 175…5% body fat… always running/cardio etc

The stressed out guy that I am hasn’t put a string of 2 weeks of working out together in over 3 years. My eating habits have been awful, but I’m trying to change.

I’m nervous about what is safe and what isn’t with my heart rate monitor. My resting heart rate is in the high 80s low 90s in my unhealthy state. I bought a heart rate monitor, played a pick up game of basketball… the heart rate monitor started beeping as I exceeded 200 beats per minute…and within my 4-5th minute playing basketball it reached 225, and I couldn’t compete anymore and dropped out.

Is it unsafe to reach those levels, or is that a great workout?
I’m normally winded walking up a flight of stairs… but I want to be able to get in shape. I know I should start slow…but I love playing bball. is 200+ safe?

I am a 23 year old male. Still a little out of shape. I recently lost 60 lbs.

I am now 170-175 lbs (5’10").

I bought a heart rate monitor (one that straps to chest) and calculated my calories burned while running/walking.

I ran and walked for 1:37. My typically setup is, I start off walking for 5 minutes. I then run a mile at 6.3 MPH, then walk another .20 miles, run a mile at 6.8 MPH, walk another .20 miles, run a mile at 7.3 MPH, walk another .20 miles, then run a mile at 7.8 MPH. Peak heart rate is 179 BPM. Average heart rate is 140.

I then walk for around 15 minutes, then I hit the indoor track and run another mile in ~ 10 minutes.

My heart rate monitor says my "fat burn" time is 44:04 and my "fitness" time is 53:29.

I burned 1139 calories in that session according to my monitor.

I do that workout I just listed 3-4 days a week, Monday, Wednesday, Friday (and maybe Saturday) and sometimes I run ~ 2-3 miles on Sunday.

I also do a spinning class twice a week. The spinning class is a total killer for me. I never sweat like that when I run. My heart rate is almost always > 180 for usually the entire hour.

I am going to wear my heart rate monitor one day to spinning to see what it says, but I was just wondering, how many calories do you think I burn in a spinning class? (Usually a Mix of starting endurance, ending strength then 15 minute cool down with a final sprint, or maybe a pyramid.

It seems like my running calories burned is really high. I read people say they burn "700 calories in spinning…" I feel wrecked after spinning, nothing like running. What do you think?

High resting heart rate?

First off, please don’t tell me, "You should go see a doctor!" I know, I’ve got an appointment in the works, but I want to hear some opinions in the meanwhile.

Anyway, I was in the hospital in december for a surgery that was unrelated to my heart. However, the doctors were really concerned- they said my heart rate was around 130 when I came in, and had stayed high the whole time. It hardly dropped at all under anesthesia, and when I was sleeping. They did an EKG, several blood tests, and two chest x-rays, but didn’t ever say that they’d found anything unusual. I was discharged, and am fully recovered now from my surgery.

However, I’m still concerned about my heart rate. My resting heart rate is over 100 bpm, all the time. I’m slightly overweight, but not obese, and I’ve been taking a fitness class to start getting myself into shape, but so far, I’ve seen no change. I’m also taking two medications, Azurette birth control pills, and sertraline for depression. I’m sure either of these could also affect my heart rate, but I haven’t really been able to test that theory yet. That’s what my upcoming doctor’s appointment is for, as well.

So yes, any opinions or ideas would be great. :) Thanks.

Does this number make sense?

I am 5 feet 11 inches, weight 237 pounds.

I just purchased a heart rate monitor with a chest strap that computes calorie burn during an exercise.

I decided to use it on a boot camp class at 24 hour fitness.

It was a really intense work out. I couldn’t keep up al the way.

I have been working out consistantlyfor almosta year so I am not totally out of shape.

Anyways, at the end of my work out, my HRM said I burned 1300 calories.

I was just wondering if that number makes sense, or is it too high to be credible?

Thanks

I forgot to mentio, It was about an hour with no breaks in between.

I’m a 187lb 5′ 6" and 39 year old male. I recently started P90X, i have not worked out for a couple of years. I bought a heart rate monitor and I have noticed that my heart rate gets up to 170 bpm really quick and my resting heart rate stays above 100 bpm for a few hours after exercise. I feel fine but the the high resting heart rate concerns me. In the morning my resting heart rate is 68-75 bpm. I have had high blood pressure for a few years now and I know that a good diet and Cardio is the best way to bring the high bp down.. Should i be concerned or is it that im out of shape and my recovery heart rate is just going to get better?
